Intro
hey guys it’s Adrian and today I’m taking a look at this Atomic slim case for the z-fold 5 from ghostec the atomic slim case features an aluminum alloy frame there’s hinge protection shock absorbing corners and it can survive drops of up to 12 feet or 3.6 meters let’s take a closer look at the fifth mat and how well the case performs and a big thank you to ghostec for sending this out for review ghostek has sent
Package Contents
over the black red and Prismatic color but let’s open it up and see what comes in the Box in the box we have the rear and front cover we also have some plastic tweezers to remove the adhesive strip covering we have additional adhesive strips if needed some dust stickers and some various cards and an instruction for how to install it before I install the case
Design
let’s just take a look at the design and if you’re wondering about the additional weight that this adds here is default 5 was adding an additional 95 grams which is kind of significant so right away I’m really liking this Prismatic color scheme that they have going on so you can see the full front frame here is completely wrapped in it except for the protective Corner bumpers and then if we take a look at the side again we also have those accents or pops of that color and then again running all around here except for the protective bumpers and for the hinge protection there’s absolutely nothing there it’s the exact same color that carries on into the bumpers which is this type of gray the front of the case has the adhesive strip so we’ll just peel off that protective covering so it adheres so you can see there’s one in this corner and one here as well nothing at the top nothing at bottom but we do see the cutouts for the speaker and microphone as well as charging ports on the rear of the case it’s the exact same thing so we can see a huge strip here that’s going to need to be removed and then we also have another strip here now we also have this very soft rubbery type of material and you can see I can press that down a little bit let me see if I could show that so this is just to add a little bit of cushion once the phone is seated back here and they have more of that cushion here so that’s a nice touch we also have cutouts at the bottom of the case and at the top of the case we have the camera module cut out and the Flash cutout and in terms of the hinge it’s a pretty sturdy hinge so you can see it opens up at a preset increment and snaps right back as well but let’s take a closer look with it applied
Installation
the adhesive strips have been removed so I’m going to slide in the front case first and I did try to snap this in guys but it was quite difficult so I believe this has to be slid in insulation done now that the z-fold 5 is
Look & Function
installed in the case it looks super sharp so you can see here we have the camera module with the flash module there as well and if we take a look at the cutouts nothing is really obstructed so everything lines up really nicely on here I also didn’t notice any of the panels coming apart or becoming loose the adhesive that’s applied on here seems to be quite strong and it seems very planted on this case while the atomic Slim 4 does add
Ergonomics
considerable bulk to the phone in terms of weight and just how wide the foam now is I didn’t find it problematic in the hand because I can still easily manipulate the phone open it up and it didn’t feel unmanageable actually sometimes found the z45 to be a little bit too narrow but if you’re not a fan of you know thick or bulky phones this is definitely a little bit on the thicker side let’s take a look at the
Fingerprint Unlock
volume rocker and power button so if I press these you can probably hear those audible clicks so they are registering but it’s a very narrow area because the lip on the front case is so high you can see that’s a significantly High lip that it makes it a little bit challenging to get your thumb all the way in there to fingerprint unlock now I always use my thumb on my right hand so I’ll just demo that and you can see it fingerprint unlocked I’ll just turn that back off and do that again and for the most part I can easily fingerprint unlock most of the times because I’m just pressing a little bit more forceful with my thumb that I normally do to accommodate for that brace lip so once you make that adjustment it should be fine to still
Cover Screen Usability
unlock the phone so that increased lip height is present around the case and it’s about four millimeters of lip height now I guess that makes sense because if this case is meant to survive you know up to a 12 foot drop it needs significant protection and that’s the main reason you would get a case like this one thing to take note of is because of that increased lip hike if you do use etch panels you’ll have to keep it on the thickest setting and I could easily pull it out on the right side but I could not get it on the left side no matter how I tried it was just too difficult because of the increased lip pipe another thing to be mindful of is say you want to move an icon from this side of the screen to the other side of the screen you can see that I can do it now if I wanted to move it back I can get it there but it’s a little bit challenging so just something to note if you use Samsung well it doesn’t seem to be a problem as long as I use my fingernail I could easily bring that up the only area on the phone where the lip is not very high is obviously when you open it up on the inside because that allows the phone to close compactly as well the raised lips were a
Camera Protection
welcome addition to the rear of the phone where all of the camera lenses are housed because anytime the phone is put flat down you don’t have to worry about them becoming damaged if you lay the phone on a table so you can use the front screen you can see that there’s pretty much no type of rocking or shaking and that’s the same if you flip it over as well so it’s quite stable in that regard here’s how the hinge
Hinge
operates when you open and close the phone notice that on some of the closing attempts the hint stays open so I have to manually close it back however if I close the phone like this and I keep my fingers at the bottom here then I can easily just keep that pressed while I close the phone otherwise if not the hinge has a tendency to stay open if you plan on opening the phone and leaving it face down there is going to be noticeable rocking because of the hinge protector if you love using wireless
Wireless Charging
chargers like I do that’s no problem with the atomic slim you could see it easily charges without any issues here’s
Black Color
what the black Atomic slim looks like and this looks super sharp it contrasts so nicely with this cream color that I have here here’s a front view of it and you can see it’s this matte black type of look and here’s what the rear looks like again same nice precise cutouts so yeah really nice with the all Matte Black
Red Color
Version here’s what the red case looks like of the atomic slim and honestly I did not think I was gonna enjoy this red case or like the look of it normally I’m not a fan of red but you can see it’s this type of metallic red finish that has a type of cool Shimmer it really makes it pop especially contrasted with the black this actually looks quite sharp so let me know like which color do you guys think looks best is it the red is it that Prismatic color or is it black and they did have you know a bunch more different options on the side I’ll leave a link so you can check those out and they have some limited edition cases too I believe a carbon fiber a leather one but yeah I’m really happy with the look of this red and the Prismatic and of course you can never go wrong with black it’s just you know we’re very stealth and it just Blends in so if
