Intro
If you just got your new iPhone 17 Pro Max and you want great protection while staying stylish, the ESR hybrid magnetic case has you covered. It’s rated for up to 11 ft of drop protection thanks to the ML STD810H rating, thick front and rear protective bezels, and air guard corners. There’s a built-in kickstand for horizontal or vertical viewing that stos away flush. And you can actually still use Maxave accessories while using the kickstand, unlike some other kickstand cases. Maxafe charging and Maxave accessories work great thanks to the super strong magnetic hold and NFC use is also unaffected. It has a slim hand feel at 1.5 millimeters thick and it also looks great in clear or black, but there is a small quirk you should be aware of. So, let’s take a closer look.

out for review. In the box for the clear case, you have the clear case and instruction manual. And in the box for the black case, you get the black case, instruction manual, and warranty card.
Design
The ESR hybrid magnetic case comes in at around 48 to 50 grams depending on the color you get. The build is mostly acrylic, TPU, and zinc alloy for this kind of hidden kickstand on the rear here. And you can see we do have an arrow pointing outward. So, you can actually lift this up just like so. And this actually pulls out to 69° of angulation. And then when you’re done, you can just snap it right back into place. And that snaps away nice and flush and stows away nicely. Now, we have a huge um kind of cover here for the camera plateau, and we actually have individual camera lens cutouts, which I know a lot of you prefer versus having the huge cutout. So, that’s nice to see. And then we also have a huge ring here, which we’re going to use for Max Safe charging and Maxafe accessories.
The clear case is 100% clear. There’s no type of matte or frosted finish, so the color of your iPhone 17 Pro Max will shine through or show nicely. Now, on the other side, we have button covers, and we also have it for the power button as well. And then for the camera control button, we do have a cover here, but it’s still going to allow you to use kind of, you know, like gestures on here to swipe between different focal lengths. I’ll demo that later. And then if we actually look on the inside here, you could see some of those contacts that will allow for that functionality. The one area of the case where it’s not completely clear is on the sides of the phone frame. We have a kind of like dimpling or stippling pattern on here. And that’s on the inner side of the case.
We have the ESR logo and slogan on the side of the case, which is nicely done and blends in well with the clear case. There’s also air guard corners on all of the corners of the case. And then we have cutouts for the speaker grill and USBC port. Now, on the right side of the case, we also have cutouts to run a lanyard loop as well. The other side of the button covers are a soft plastic, so this will not scratch your phone’s frame. The camera control button is slightly recessed into the case’s frame to prevent accidental touches or clicks. The black version of the hybrid magnetic case is basically the same all the way around. Now, you can see the logo a little bit more prominently on the black case.
And if we look at the air guard corners where we see this kind of one black nodule or bump here for the air guard corner on the um clear case, you can see it kind of looks like a two-part split, but it is still just a one large bump. It’s just the inner side showing that split. The camera control button cover is also a different color, but essentially they’re the same case in all aspects. You can also see the camera guard writing a little bit more prominently on the black case. I do have
Case Installation
a pre-applied screen protector on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but let’s go ahead and install it into the clear case. So, I’ll start at the top, press on the corners, and that snaps into place effortlessly. And this is what the ESR hybrid magnetic case in clear looks like on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. And I’m always a fan of clear cases since you can actually see the original color of the phone. And this just pairs so well. You know, the silver Pro Max that I have here along with this kind of silver bezel that goes around for the camera guard looks so nice. The hand feel is awesome with the hybrid magnetic case. So, this is about 1.5 mm thick. And even though I could feel that the grip is wider, it doesn’t feel bulky or cumbersome in any way.
It’s really easy for me to just go ahead and rotate the phone, flip it upside down, just manipulate it any way I see fit without any issues. The fitment of the case is
Post-Install Thoughts
great on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Basically, all around, there’s no type of loose edges or anything like that. And even with that pre-applied screen protector that I have on here, the front lip still wraps around nicely to help keep the phone’s frame retained in there. If you won’t be running a screen protector with your iPhone 17 Pro Max, the actual front lip or bezels extend high enough so that if you place this screen side down, there’s not going to be any damage to your phone. And even with the screen protector I have applied on here, the front lip still extends above it. So, we have very thick protective front bezels.
Looking at the rear camera guard, if I go ahead and do a side view, you can see that that raises or extends so much above the actual lens that if you place this camera side down, you won’t have any type of damage. And of course, the individual lens are all surrounded or wrapped by their own cutouts for maximum protection. The cutouts are also very precise for the speaker grill and USBC charging port. Button presses are really tactile and easy to use without any type of issues. The touch capacitive button also works flawlessly without any type of issues. Both of these cases look fantastic on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but let me know which you think looks
Wobble Test
better. Let’s do a wobble test. So, I’ll place the phone camera side down. And if I tap around the top or middle sides of the screen, the wobble is very slight and minimal. But if I get to the bottom left corner, you can see there is significant wobbling. And you could probably hear it, but it’s still very manageable. So, the wobbling on the lower left side is the quirk I mentioned at the start of the video. Maybe it’s a big deal for you, maybe not.
Protection
I dropped my phone camera side and screen side down from about 3 and 1/2 ft and there was zero damage. But this is actually rated for up to 11 ft of drop protection thanks to the ML STD810H rating and the thick front and rear bezels and air guard corners. Using
Magsafe
Maxafe charging and Maxafe accessories is no problem thanks to the strong secure magnetic hold. There’s also zero
NFC
issues using tap to pay or NFC. Using
Kickstand
the built-in kickstand is really easy. So, where you have this arrow, you’re just going to put your fingernail, kind of pry this out, and this goes out to a maximum angulation of 69°. So, you could use it for horizontal viewing this way. You can also flip it this way as well. And you can also use it for vertical viewing this way as well. Now, you can actually put it this way, but I haven’t figured out a way to actually flip the display on the Pro Max in terms of the kickstand stability. So, if I put it in this orientation, you could see that the phone is moving around as I bang the table, but it’s actually not collapsing or buckling the kickstand. And when you’re done, you could just snap it back into place and it stos away nice and flush.
So, if you were to use a kickstand in the middle of the case and you kind of flipped it out and you’re using your phone either horizontally or vertically, you can’t actually attach a Mac safe power bank to this. You the only way to charge your phone would be through a cable. But if you’re on the go and you’re using this type of kickstand, so you have it out for horizontal viewing. I can just attach my power bank right here. You can see it’s charging at the top there. And I can just have my phone, you know, kind of in this horizontal orientation. It’s actively charging while I’m enjoying content. So,
