Transmitter Unit – Buttons, Ports & Build Quality
The mics or transmitters are extremely lightweight, coming in at around 7 grams only, thanks to the mostly plastic build. However, the plastic doesn’t feel too cheap and seems like it would survive a drop since it is so lightweight. The top of the transmitters have the Godox logo, slight textured area and an LED light, which shows when the mics are powered on (green LED) and if they are in denoise mode (orange LED).
The orange power button can be used to power the transmitters on or off and activate or deactivate the denoise feature. However, they are automatically powered on when they are removed from the charging case. There is a mic grill and metal charging contacts on the sides of the mic as well.
The underside of the transmitters has a large metallic surface for the variety of magnet buttons to attach to. By default, the mics are connected to a small magnetic button that fits conveniently inside the charging case.
Receiver Unit – Buttons, Ports & Build Quality
The receiver unit is also very lightweight at around 5 grams due to the all plastic build. It also has the Godox logo on top with a slightly textured area. The are also two small LED lights to show when the transmitters are powered on (green LED). These LEDs change to orange when the denoise feature is activated.
The power button can also be used to activate or deactivate the denoise feature and to help with pairing, but the transmitters and receiver are automatically paired when they are removed from the case.
The receiver unit has a USB type C port that inserts into your phone’s charging port to act as an external microphone, which was automatically detected on my Samsung S24 Ultra phone. There’s no built in battery on the receiver unit since it is powered by your phone.
There’s also a USB type C slot that can be used to keep your phone constantly charged by using the receiver unit for pass-through charging, which is super handy for extended shooting sessions.
Magnetic Mounting Options
The magnetic mounting options available show the insight Godox has put into the Cube-SC mic system to make it versatile for use anywhere.
By default, the mics are stowed in the charging case with a small but very powerful magnetic button so that they can be attached to shirts, collars, sweaters, etc.
A magnetic alligator clip is also available to get around using the magnetic button on thicker materials.
A magnetic lanyard strap with a rubberized finish is also available, which is prone to picking up dust.
Easy First-Time Use
Once I took the transmitters out of the case and plugged the receiver unit into my phone’s USB C charging port, everything was automatically powered on and paired, easy!
Be mindful to remove the plastic covering from the magnetic charging ports on the transmitter units so they can recharge when you put them back in the case after use.
If anything ever goes out of sync, you can always pair the units back manually. You also have the option to turn off one of the transmitters so you’re only using one at a time if you want to prolong battery life by having the other mic on standby when the first one is out of battery.
Quick Settings
The transmitter units only allow turning the denoise feature on or off with a quick press of the power button. The LED lights on both the transmitter and receiver will turn orange when the denoise is activated. I did not find a way to mute the microphones through the buttons.
Godox Mic App Settings
You can also download the Godox Mic app, which is worth it to see battery life of each transmitter, change the mic volume input level, set the denoise strength or turn it off completely and turn the Amplifier on or off also. Note that the input volume level cannot be set independently for each mic unit.
There is no way to change the volume input level, change the denoise strength or toggle the Amplifier without the app.
Audio Quality
The audio sounds pretty good straight out of my phone and the following audio clips are completely unedited.
The input level was set to level 3 for both microphones in all the clips and no wind muff/shield was used.
Wind Shield
The windshields are super easy to put on, and you still retain access to the power button to activate the denoise feature. The magnetic mounting is also unaffected because the windshield housing only goes around the sides of the mic unit and includes a cut-out where it sits for the microphone grill. Taking it on and off is easy, and once it’s on, it says put.
Battery Life
The rated battery life is around 10 hours for the transmitters. Whenever they do fully deplete, it takes around 1.5 hours to recharge them in the charging case.
The receiver receives power from your phone, so no worries there. You can also connect a USB C Cable to the receiver unit to allow pass-through charging to your phone. This is so handy because if you have a vlog cage setup, you can mount a power bank to the cage and keep your phone topped up through the receiver unit.
Cube-S Charging Case
The charging case can be recharged with a USB type C port, and four indicator lights show the battery life.
To open up the charging case, you just press the end with the indicator lights inwards to trigger the spring-loaded mechanism which pushes the case’s inner tray out.
Recording Distance
The Cube-S system is rated for up to 300 meters or 984 feet of recording distance, providing that there is a clear line of sight. I only tested it out up to around 50 feet or 15 meters without issue.
What I’d Like To See Changed
The Cube-S system is simple and convenient to use. However, I would have liked the ability to mute the microphones or transmitters by pressing the power button once or double or triple-clicking it. Since the Godox Mic app is available, it would also be good to remap the button for muting if denoise is not a feature I anticipate using often.
Summing Up
If you’re looking to enhance the audio coming out of your phone without too much hassle, the Godox Cube-S system is a great system to get into. The roughly 10 hours of battery life easily offers a full day of recording, and you can also use one mic at a time to have one on standby. The charging case is also there if needed and you’ll never have to worry about the receiver’s battery life or your phone’s battery life since you have pass-through charging.
The insane 300 meters or 984 ft of recording distance, if you have a clear line of sight, is way more than needed, and I didn’t experience any issues with audio dropouts or signal interference during my testing.
The audio also sounds great straight out of my phone without any editing, but I do recommend downloading the Godox Mic app so you can monitor audio levels and adjust the input volume if needed. The price makes it a great value too with all the accessories it comes with to get you up and running right away, and the magnetic mounting options are really well thought out!
