Video Showing C Stand Setup
Today, I want to share how I set up my Sony A7III to take top down or overhead video shots and photos.
There are a bunch of ways to do this, such as using a tripod with a main column that can extend horizontally instead of the traditional vertical way. Another option is to use two tripod stands with a main pipe or bar going across both tripod tops. While these are great cost-effective options, I choose to go with a more sturdy setup since my camera setup is pretty heavy.
In the photo and video below, I have a Sony A7iii and a Sigma 14-24 F2.8 DG DN Art lens which weighs around 3½ lbs.
My overhead or top down setup relies on using a C Stand and attaching the camera to the C Stand’s extension arm using a Smal Rig clamp, adapter and tripod ball head to allow me to articulate the camera angle easily using the tripod ball head once it is mounted.
Of course, you can screw in the camera body directly to the C Stand arm if there is a thread adapter built-in, but adjusting the camera afterwards for a perfect shot is more annoying that way.
Instead of attaching the camera directly to the C Stand arm end directly, I use a tripod head, Small Rig clamp and 1/4″ to 3/8″ thread adapter to connect everything. Here is an example of the equipment used:

Let me know if you have any questions about my setup, or if you have a better way to mount your camera using a C Stand.
